renegade craft fair chicago!

i took place in the renegade craft fair in chicago this past weekend, and had so much fun! it was pretty stressful leading up to the event, and it ended up taking us seventeen hours to get there (so many flooded highways in western PA), but i really had a great time. i made some new friends, ate some tasty treats, and learned a whole lot. i have done very few in-person events like this, so i still have quite a few kinks to work out, but i am newly excited about doing pop-up shops! and i was so psyched to share a booth with my pal melissa, of missmillie ceramics. i think our stuff goes great together, and we have great fun together. a good time had by all. thanks for being so damn fantastic, chicago! hope to see you again soon. xo, hank

hi there! just a little peek at what my art star booth set up looked like. i have only done two other events like this so far, so i still have quite a few kinks to work out as far as display, etc., but it's getting there. many of you have inquired as to whether the items in the previous post will be available in my shop. i made those items for the art star craft bazaar this past weekend, and since it was a pretty soggy weekend (so glad i sprung for the really good tent!), i do actually still have some of the items, and will be listing them in my shop throughout the week, as i am able to finish up the photos.

just a few shots of the scene around here lately. this past week was pretty insane. it started on monday with some dudes coming over for a few hours to film + interview me in my studio for a documentary they are working on about artists in south philadelphia. i was super nervous, and i'm very uncomfortable in front of a camera, but they made it fun, so i ended up feeling pretty good about it. i have been sewing and sewing and sewing, first catching up on over fifty orders form last week (thanks so much, everyone!), then finishing up some inventory for the artstar craft bazaar this weekend. i was not able to finish nearly as many bags as i had hoped, but there are only so many hours in each day. if you are in philadelphia, please stop by my booth (i'm sharing with tim gough) and say hi. it might be soggy, but i'm hoping for the best.

two new bags. a big ol' tote in black+white stripes with a diagonal slice of brown at the bottom. i added little leather details to the tops of the straps, so they are extra handsome and they stay put on your shoulder. also, a teeny little purse just in time for spring +summer, with an extra long strap that can be tied to your favorite length, and just enough room for the essentials. look for them both in the shop tomorrow (saturday) morning.

i woke up extra early this morning and finished these photos, packed up the orders from the weekend, and even straightened up my studio a bit. i turn thirty tomorrow, and even though i keep saying it over and over, it still seems weird that i have been around for thirty years. not that i think thirty is old or anything, it still just seems weird that is how many years old i am. so i am going to take advantage of this amazing fake summer weather we have in philadelphia today and give myself a well-deserved day off. i am going to do some things i rarely make time for-- use the word 'lunch' as a verb, do some relaxing, pedicure-ing, and shopping with my bestie. i don't usually get too into my own birthday, but this is a big one and the sun is shining so i figure i deserve a funday monday. xo, hank.

thank you everyone for making last week's update such a success, and for the zipper purse orders that are still trickling in. frances wanted to take all the credit for packing up those orders so she parked her little pug tush right in front of the boxes when i was snapping that shot.

i seem to be in a bit of a funk this week. i had grand plans for new bags and a shop update this week, but all i seemed to accomplish was a stack of misfires. such a sad little pile of failed bags. that's okay, though-- there are still two more days left in the week, and all kinds of awesome might (hopefully!) happen in those 48 hours. i'm keeping my chin up, my fingers crossed, and my netflix streaming. and if not, there's always next week! xo, hank.

last weekend i was able to make a few much-needed days off. my good pal kat and i (and frances) drove up to the hamptons to visit my friend (her sister), who is currently working on a farm out there and living in a little house in the woods. we went to visit her back in august, and it is a completely different place this time of year. liz calls the swarms who vacation there in the summertime 'turkeys', which is both fitting and funny. it is pretty deserted in the winter, which was really nice. it was also the most beautiful few days we had in quite a while (it felt like spring!), which meant spending some valued time outdoors. we spent most of two afternoons on the beach, and frances went in the ocean for the first time (she loves it!). it was so, so wonderful to soak up some sunshine and breathe some non-philadelphia air and spend time with two of my favorite humans.

i was able to make four of the small cross-body style bags, with a longer leather strap with antique brass finish hardware and rivet details. the larger messenger style bags (2 available) have a large slip pocket under the flap, which is the entire width of the bag and nearly as tall (as well as four smaller slip pockets on the inside of the bag), and the shoulder strap is nice sturdy light brown leather (adjustable and can be shortened to wear on the shoulder, or extended to wear across the chest). you can see more photos of both bags on my flickr page. the bags will be available tomorrow (wednesday february 16th) at 8pm EST in my etsy shop.

hey there. sorry things have been so quiet around here the past week or so. i am finishing up a new batch of tough ruffles shoulder bags, and those will be available in the shop on wednesday (will announce the shop update and time later today once i am able to put everything together).
in other news, madebyhank finally joined twitter. i was fortunate enough to be selling next to lisa from tree and kimball at the vagabond sale on saturday, and she finally sold me on it. it was so nice to sit down with a fellow maker and seller and swap stories. working from home and running a small business means i do not get out into the world very often, so it was almost like having a co-worker for a day. so, let the social networking begin! follow madebyhank on twitter here.

thank you so much for the orders from yesterday's zipper purses update! i am busy, busy, writing up orders and carefully packaging each one. those will go out either tomorrow (tuesday), or at the very latest wednesday.

i have been [happily!] sewing the days away lately, taking full advantage of all the snowy and grey days we have had in philadelphia by putting myself to work. i feel so much more productive lately, after taking a few much needed days to rest and re-organize after the holiday rush and new year. it seems i have also successfully replaced coffee with a morning spirulina + flax oil + fruit smoothie. i feel about one thousand times better, and even though i was definitely addicted to the caffeine, (most days i would have about 8 shots of espresso), i seem to have kicked that habit. which is great, since unfortunately the energy it was giving me also ended up making me feel super anxious and stressed. i still really want to drink coffee, not because i feel the need for caffeine anymore, but because i love the taste. but i cannot be trusted to have just a little, so i will stick to smoothies and bubbly water.

but back to bags. there will be new tough ruffles zipper purses and shoulder bags in shades of aqua, olive, deep teal, and grey available in the bigcartel shop around 8am EST tomorrow (tuesday) morning. did you notice the zipper clutch a-go-go in the sneak peek photos? it is the first of many new shades to come.

thank you to everyone who entered the giveaway! it was a lot of work, but a lot of fun, so there will be more of those in the near future. i enjoyed reading through all of the comments, and appreciate the feedback about what some of you would like to see from madebyhank this year. i wanted to let everyone know that the ruffle bags with the flaps and leather belt straps have not disappeared from the shop forever. i just have not had the chance to go on nearly as many thrifting adventures as i would like to, but that style of shoulder bag will make a comeback very soon. also, the zipper clutch a go-go (similar to this style) has been requested quite a bit, and will return soon as well. i just received a large shipment of zippers, so that style is at the top of my list as well. other surprises are in store, and i will post about new bags and projects as i am able to complete them.

phew-- choosing the winners was quite a venture. i had it worked out in my head that i would just cut and paste the comments into textedit and print them out and number them, so that i wouldn't have to count to 300 or above eleven times (i would have lost count several times and ended up re-counting about one million times). that didn't work, because when i tried to cut & paste, it pasted the photos also, and would have been either a ton of work to cut and paste each one individually, or waste about 60 sheets of paper and a whole lot of ink printing all those pages. i decided to write out a list of all of the names, which even though it may seem silly to write over three hundred names, it worked out well. a handful of folks accidentally posted their comments twice, so to this method ended up making things a bit more fair for everyone, because i did not count the repeated comments. then i broke out my trusty iphone and used a randomizer to choose the eleven lucky W I N N E R S !!!

it took me a bit longer than i had hoped to put this together, but here it is! the thank-you-for-being-awesome giveaway!

i made this tote for a very good friend. i used heavy corded canvas, embellished with scraps of suede repurposed from vintage skirts. i made a small guide, and hand cut each piece, then stitched them on and finished the front with a few antique brass pyramid studs. there is a small dee ring on the front, with a few vintage wooden beads that i strung onto a bit of rawhide (it is removable). you can see a glimpse of the interior here. i wish i had taken some photos of all of the other gifts i made for folks this year, but most of them were stitched at the every last moments before giving them, so unfortunately i was not able to. but i played around with a lot of fabrics, details, etc that i have been wanting to for quite a while, but with the holiday rush and finishing up the stitched pieces for my show in december, i have had to put it off. but you will see many new things from madebyhank this year! i am also putting together some items for a giveaway, so keep an eye for an announcement and details about that next week.

just listed a new batch of tough ruffles shoulder bags in my etsy shop. they all have a flap, with a magnetic snap closure underneath, and a large exterior slip pocket under the flap. there are three shades available: blue-grey, cocoa brown, and blue with deep navy.

**a quick note about holiday shipping: i live one block from the nearest post office, and through december 24th i will be shipping all orders right away. hey there. sorry things have been so quiet around here and the shop lately. my friend kat and i are having a show at sweet jane vintage this month. kat makes paintings, i make stitchings, and we have both been working around the clock to finish these pieces during the busiest time of year. if you happen to be in philadelphia, stop by the opening and see what we have been up to.

i just added some of the zipper purses, as well as one patricia bag to my etsy shop. it has been quite a while since i have sold items through etsy, and i have been going back and forth about which shop to keep and which to close (etsy vs. bigcartel), or if i should have both open at once. i am going to have both open for the time being, and once i finish up the existing orders that i am behind on, i will add new items to the etsy shop. i have had mixed reactions from customers, so here id your platform to help me decide. which of my shops do you prefer-- etsy or bigcartel, and why?
